Breeding

Nests in a tunnel dug into a vertical earth bank, usually near water. Breeding banks are sensitive and should never be approached.

How to find it

Walk quiet banks of rivers, canals and ponds with clear water and overhanging branches. Listen for its high, sharp whistle as it passes low over the water.

How to identify it in the field

Small size, straight fast flight just above the water and the electric blue back are usually the first clues.

Photography

General guidance based on the species’ behaviour, not a report of Nick’s personal field experience.

Difficulty
Difficult
Behaviour to anticipate
Birds often return to the same perches. Watch which branches it uses before trying to photograph a dive.
Starting shutter speed
For flight and dives, start at 1/2000 sec or faster.
Autofocus
Small, fast subject against busy backgrounds; subject detection and a small focus area help.
Fieldcraft
Stay still, low and concealed, and let the bird come to its perch rather than following it along the bank.
Ethics
Never approach nesting banks, never use playback, and leave if the bird repeatedly changes behaviour because of you.

Practical starting points, not fixed rules.
