Identification
Uniform dark brown fur with a white chin and upper lip. Polecat-sized but more evenly coloured, with shorter guard hairs.
Habitat
Semi-aquatic, on banks of running and still water with dense vegetation; rarely more than 100 m from the water. Winters only in water bodies that do not freeze.
Distribution
Formerly from the Danube Delta to the mountains. Today mainly the Danube Delta, with recent reports from a few rivers in the Gurghiu Mountains, Harghita, Maramureș, Suceava and the Retezat Mountains.

Diet
Mainly fish and amphibians, also small mammals, insects and birds.
Behaviour
Nocturnal and crepuscular, hard to observe. Competition with the invasive American mink is a major threat.
Seasonality in Romania
Monthly presence has not yet been source-verified.
Breeding
Mates from late April to mid-May; 3–7 young born in late June–early July.
