Identification

Slim, black above and white below, with a needle-thin black bill and very long pink-red legs.

Habitat

Shallow fresh water: lakes, marshes, floodplains and flooded areas.

Distribution

Found across the country wherever there are significant wetlands, except the mountains and submontane zone.
