Identification

Small owl with a large square head, pale facial disc framed in black and a 'surprised' expression.

Habitat

Extensive conifer forest; in the breeding season it prefers dense forest with small peat bogs. Sometimes hunts over farmland.

Distribution

Throughout the Carpathians at higher altitudes with conifer forest, mainly spruce, also mixed with fir.

Breeding

Breeds March–July; 3–6 eggs incubated by the female for about 29 days.
