Identification

Dark slate-grey with a brown back, a white line along the flanks and white undertail. Adults have a red shield and yellow-tipped bill.

Habitat

Marshes and wetlands with plenty of vegetation: lakes, ponds, canals, irrigation channels and slow rivers.
