Identification

Stocky finch with a black cap, grey back and white rump; the male is rose-red below, the female buff-grey.

Habitat

Deciduous, mixed and conifer forest in the mountain zone, wherever there are thickets or a rich shrub layer.

Breeds in the mountain zone; in winter it appears across the whole country.
