Identification

Small hawk with short rounded wings and a long tail. Males are slate-grey above with orange barring below; females are larger, browner and grey-barred.

Habitat

Dense forests and tree clumps in open land, from lowlands to mountains.

Distribution

Continuous distribution in hill and mountain areas, fragmented elsewhere; most abundant in Transylvania and around the Carpathian arc.
