Identification

Small duck. The breeding male has a brown head with a bold white stripe curving back from the eye; the female is mottled brown with a striped face.

Habitat

Shallow fresh water with abundant vegetation in plains and steppe; marshes and coastal lagoons during migration.

Distribution

Breeds across lowland plains and plateaus, scattered and in small numbers; larger numbers in the Danube Delta.

Breeding

Breeding begins in April or May. The female lays a single clutch of 8–11 eggs and incubates alone.

Flooded meadows and shallow marshes in spring migration, especially in March and April.
