Identification

Slimmer than the grey heron, with a rufous, black-striped neck and darker grey-purple body. Snake-like neck.

Habitat

Extensive natural wetlands with large reedbeds, where it nests in quiet, isolated areas.

Distribution

Breeds in the lowlands, especially the Danube Delta and large floodplain wetlands.
