A small, colonial falcon of open plains that often hunts insects on the wing late in the day.

Identification

Males are dark slate-grey with red-orange legs, vent and eye-ring; females have an orange crown and underparts and a grey barred back.

Habitat

Open plains with scattered trees or tree lines, where it often nests in old rook colonies.

Distribution

Breeds outside the Carpathian arc: Dobrogea (including the Delta), lowlands of Muntenia and Moldavia, and the Western Plain. Only sporadic in Transylvania.
