Follow drumming and calls, then stay still at a distance and let the bird come round the trunk into view.

Never wait beside an occupied nest hole, never use playback, and move on if the birds stop feeding or start alarm-calling.

Identification

Black-and-white woodpecker similar to the Great Spotted, but without the black bar linking the moustache to the nape.

Habitat

Scattered trees in and around settlements: gardens, parks, orchards, nurseries and shelterbelts, also small woods near farms and village edges.

Distribution

Present across almost all of Romania except the mountains.

Breeding

Lays 3–7 eggs in April–May (rarely June) in a cavity excavated by both sexes; incubation 9–11 days.
