Identification

Breeding adults have a black cap, white cheeks, dark grey underparts and a red bill. Short notched tail.

Habitat

Low-altitude wetlands, especially silting lakes with abundant floating and submerged vegetation, rivers and marshes.

Distribution

Breeds patchily, mainly in wetlands outside the Carpathian arc and most abundantly in the Danube Delta; isolated inside the arc.
